As individuals, let us not deceive ourselves into thinking that we can avoid our God-given responsibility to be active participants in the moral, political, and spiritual development, protection, and general welfare of our society. We must be ready to do right AND to expose and work against the wrong doings that surround us, beginning with our own sin. Jesus sternly warned us to examine our own hypocrisies about our belief structures, our judgments, and our deeds.
Here's an example of one leader whose actions caused the nation of Israel to be scattered to the four winds... because most of the people just went along with his unholy ways:
Jeremiah 15:1-4
1 Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth.
2 And it shall come to pass, if they say unto thee, Whither shall we go forth? then thou shalt tell them, Thus saith the LORD; Such as are for death, to death; and such as are for the sword, to the sword; and such as are for the famine, to the famine; and such as are for the captivity, to the captivity.
3 And I will appoint over them four kinds, saith the LORD: the sword to slay, and the dogs to tear, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the earth, to devour and destroy.
4 And I will cause them to be removed into all kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh the son of Hezekiah king of Judah, for that which he did in Jerusalem.

God has repeatedly said that what happened to Israel is, forever, an example to all the rest of humanity. That constant reminder of God's call upon our lives, and of His righteousness and judgment, is probably why so many people hate the Jews. If you and I do not want destruction to fall on the USA, then we need to get our own lives right with God and if we think to receive anything good from God then we need to get active in what God wants for us and our nation, spiritually, morally, and politically, for life as a human being consists of all those elements. To neglect any of those elements is to neglect part of one's self.
