Originally, the LORD God had Jeremiah speak directly to the Jews, about 2,600 years ago. Yet, the principles contained in the Book of Jeremiah still apply to every soul, especially to all who claim to know or follow God, or a god. His Word even applies to those who think that they are gods, or make believe that there is no God.
Don't be distracted by the number of years since God spoke to and through Jeremiah, "But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." (2 Peter 3:8). The whole of 2 Peter Chapter 3 is a precious reminder of God's call and promises throughout all the ages of human history.
Jeremiah 2:11-13:
11 Hath
a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people
have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.
12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be
horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD.
13 For my people have committed two evils; they have
forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns,
broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
Jeremiah 2:19:
19 Thine
own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know
therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou
hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith
the Lord GOD of hosts.
The knowledge of God is found all around us, but it all points in one direction, defined by and in His Christ, Jesus, who is the Living Word, even as Scripture says, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us."
The Book of Jeremiah was written about 600 B.C., but is STILL highly relevant to the lives, decisions, and conduct of individuals and nations, today. Jeremiah Chapter 2 demonstrates the collective responsibility for the decay of the Nation of Israel, as every individual contributes to the repentance or sin of their nation. What God says to the Jews, in Jeremiah, establishes the pattern by which God tests and judges all nations. IF we, or any individual or nation, refuse to turn to the LORD GOD by the means that He has provided to us, for our eternal and temporal security, then we shall have chosen to "paddle our own canoe" to Hell. The decision is ours, as individuals and as a nation.
Therefore, the MOST urgent question for each of us at this very moment is, shall I, and we, continue to push God, His Christ, and His salvation, away from us, or shall I, and we, accept, receive, and embrace God's plan of salvation. Remember that Jesus Christ left an eternal Standard by which we shall all be judged, and THAT is NOT the will, the works, nor the word of mankind.
If you're unclear about the scriptural justification for such claims, please read the Bible's books of Genesis, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Luke, John, Romans, and Revelation.
Open yourself to the Spirit of God's Christ, Jesus, and ask Him to open and guide your understanding, that you might turn from the world to the living God and His living Christ.
